The Claude Certified Architect (Professional) exam, code CCAR-P, is the advanced tier of the Architect track and the most senior of Anthropic's four certifications. Where the Foundations exam asks whether you can design a working Claude system, Professional asks whether you can own one in production: build it, ship it, defend the decisions to stakeholders, and keep it safe and compliant over its lifecycle. It's aimed squarely at people who already do that work.

Who it's for
The guide is direct about its audience: mid- to senior-level technical professionals. Solution architects, AI and ML engineers, technical leads, and senior software engineers, across regulated and complex sectors like financial services, healthcare, retail, technology, education, and government.
It's just as direct about who it isn't for. Entry-level developers, casual users, and anyone in a purely non-technical or prompt-only role won't find this exam a fit. It assumes you've delivered end-to-end AI systems, not just contributed to them.
Recommended experience is substantial: a foundation in software-engineering best practices, three or more years in systems architecture or platform engineering, at least six months hands-on with Claude or comparable models in production, and real end-to-end delivery under your belt. As with every exam in the programme, that experience is recommended, not required. There are no mandatory prerequisites, and the credential is awarded on exam performance alone.
The seven domains
Professional keeps the architecture and integration core you'd expect, then extends into the governance, communication, and lifecycle concerns that come with senior ownership.

Integration is the single heaviest domain at 19%, which fits the exam's premise: production Claude systems live inside a mess of existing enterprise systems, and the value is in connecting them well. The three domains that mark Professional out from Foundations are governance and risk, stakeholder communication and lifecycle, and developer enablement. Together they're 35% of the exam, and none of them appear on the Foundations blueprint at all.
How it differs from Foundations
If you're weighing the two Architect exams, the split is clean:
- Foundations (CCAR-F) is scenario-based, 60 items, five domains. It tests design and build judgement on four scenarios drawn from a bank of six. Typical candidate: around six months building with Claude.
- Professional (CCAR-P) is standalone-item, 63 items, seven domains. It tests the same design instincts plus governance, stakeholder work, and lifecycle ownership. Typical candidate: three or more years in architecture or platform engineering.
Both run 120 minutes and need a scaled 720 out of 1,000 to pass. Crucially, Professional does not require Foundations. No certification in the programme lists another as a prerequisite. If Professional matches your work, sit it directly.

How to prepare while the track is built
The dedicated Professional prep track is on the way. Its blueprint page already lays out every domain and the exam facts. In the meantime, the most useful free preparation is to get genuinely hands-on with Claude system design, because Professional builds on exactly those foundations.
The free Architect (Foundations) curriculum covers agentic architecture, tool and MCP design, Claude Code configuration, prompt engineering, and context management. That's the technical spine Professional assumes you already have. Work through it, then take a mock exam to pressure-test your judgement under time. It won't cover the governance and stakeholder domains, but it will sharpen the architecture and integration thinking that carries the most weight on both exams.
